Biography
Donald W. Record, 86, Holmes Beach, passed away January 15, 2010 at his residence after a long illness.
Mr. Record was born April 4, 1923 in Walpole, N.H. to the late Charles D. and Ruby Stark Record. He was raised in Brattleboro, Vt. and was a graduate of the Brattleboro High School Class of 1940.
He served as a Chief Yeoman, and was a Qualified Submarine, Sound and Radar man with the United States Navy during World War II as a submariner, serving in the Panama Canal Zone and in the Pacific Ocean . During his submarine service, he served on the U.S.S. S-17 and the U.S.S. Batfish submarines and several other surface ships. He was awarded during his military service the Asiatic Pacific Medal, Submarine Combat Insignia with one star, the WWII Victory Medal, European African Middle Eastern Medal, and many other medals and citations. Following his military service he worked for a while with the Brattleboro Reformer as a linotype operator.
He went on to lead a very prosperous life, having homes in York, Maine, Honolulu, Hawaii, Brattleboro, Vt. and Holmes Beach, Fla. where he has lived for the last 20 years. Mr. Record's worked most of his life in Brattleboro where he started out raising chickens, and building and owning three mobile home parks. He was also the owner of the former Hillwinds Farm in Brattleboro which was a well known horse farm and is now known as Mt. Home Sales and Hillwinds Storage. While living in the York, Maine area he was known for the remodeling he did on a former local church and the conversion of it into the York Village Craft. His other memberships include the Submarine Veterans of WWII, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Elks, and the York Beach Historical Society. When not involved in working he and his wife loved to travel, and during his lifetime he made two trips around the world and made several trips to foreign lands.
Mr. Record was predeceased in addition to his parents by four brothers, Wendell, Wayland, Gordon and Raymond, and is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, June of Holmes Beach, son, Douglas W. Record of Boynton Beach, Fl., Daughter, Dianne R. (Dan) Lantz of Bradenton, Fla., sister, Madolyn R. Johnson of Brattleboro, Vt., four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
FUNERAL SERVICE: A Memorial Service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the American Legion Post #5, 32 Linden Street in Brattleboro. Interment will follow in Meetinghouse Hill Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to a gathering at Hillwinds Farm on Upper Dummerston Road in Brattleboro following the interment.
